A Safe Nest

Good morning Lincoln Nursery School!  I have been spending some time at my mother’s house in a town called Winthrop. I want to share with you something unusual that is happening on her front porch!  Do you notice anything unusual on this porch yet?  Well, first I’m going to read a story called “The Best Nest” by P.D. Eastman, and then we will get a closer look.

Friday was a very windy and rainy day. In the morning I didn’t hear birds chirping, so I wondered where do the birds go when it’s stormy outside? At the begining of this video you will HEAR the WIND!

Here are the signs to remind everyone that there is a bird nesting in the light.

Here are some birds that were spotted near the nest. Do you think one of these birds built a nest on the porch? I wonder…?

This duck was swimming in a big puddle down the street.

This robin was eating in the backyard.

When the rainstorm stopped, a mourning dove appeared on the fence. This bird’s song sounds like wooo-oo-oo-oo.

Would you like to make a bird feeder to attract birds near your house?  Here is a recipe for a Pinecone Bird Feeder!

 1) Find a pinecone

 2) Put a sticky nut or seed butter all around the pinecone. You can use sunflower butter, soy butter or a nut butter.

3)Roll the pinecone into birdseed, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds or dry oatmeal.

 4) Tie a string around the top and hang it on a tree branch!

I noticed in the book “And Then it’s Spring” that there was a bird feeder made from a milk carton, so we looked at the picture in the book and tried it out.

1)Use a milk carton, juice container or yogurt container.

 2) The adult will need to cut an opening on two sides or four like the picture below.

3)Find a stick in your yard for the birds to perch on, and squeeze it through two holes in the carton.

4) Punch 2 holes in the top of the carton and add some string. Then add seeds and hang on a tree!

I wonder if the bird making a nest in the light would like more materials.  I decided to try out Wendy’s nesting idea!  I looked for materials inside and outside of my house.

I found thick yarn, thin yarn and string. Then I found lint from my dryer and soft wool. Next I found sticks and dried grasses. I looked for something to put everything in…it took some searching. I found a berry container! It is now hanging on a tree branch near the porch.  Do you think the birds will discover these new nesting materials?
