Lyrics by Mark Weltner ; melody: “Grand Old Duke of York”
There’s an elephant in my shoe
There’s an elephant in my shoe
He’s stuck in there with superglue,
There’s an elephant in my shoe.
We start by pretending there are elephants in our shoes, and so we stomp like elephants. Then we move on to other things – if we have popcorn in our shoes we’ll jump up and down, if it’s a rocking chair we’ll rock back and forth, etc. So it’s a vehicle for moving in all different ways; usually we stay in one place, but sometimes we’ll move around the circle. Sometimes I dictate what we’re being; other times, the children come up with their own ideas.
