Studio Yellow, Week 16

The start of 2020 has brought a plethora of new explorations within the studio.

The icy landscape of the playground provided a blank canvas for experimentation.

Encountering many pans full of ice, Ben and Wesley wondered what would happen if they brought some  into the studio.

“It would melt because it’s warm.”  Ben
“We would have to leave it until the evening.” Wesley

So we did just that. We checked our frozen cakes the next morning and discovered much to their satisfaction that they were in fact correct- the ice had melted.

On the playground and in the woods the ice was a perfect place to practice their sledding and skating but the most exciting thing was trying to break it into smaller pieces.

To further the ‘demolition’ of ice, large blocks were brought into the sensory table.  The first day children were given salt and colored water to expedite the breakdown process.  Although interesting to some, it seems this process was too slow compared to the immediate gratification of chopping, cracking and stomping ice. The following day hand drills were added, offering a much more satisfying experience.

Throughout the studio there was much excitement as new materials were discovered.  Could we fill a Blokus board up without leaving any gaps?  Why doesn’t the snow the penguins are playing on melt? How can we use our fingers to draw and write in the sand on the light table? Can you tell a story with Lego or on the felt board?

With the hope for some fresh snow soon, together we read some winter tales of two of our beloved characters – Tacky and Elmer.
