Studio Red: week 18

Dear Studio Red,

What did we notice on our walk to Owl Tree?  How have the woods changed?

Love, Lauri and Emily

OUR WEEK IN PARTS

INDOOR EXPLORE

What do we discover as we attach cardboard shapes and add details with color?

What marks do we make in Tree Blood?

Here children have explored mandalas, letters, and line.

How can we use this new material at the drawing table?

What do we find out as we return to a past discovery?

Awhile back, before winter break, Jackson and Luca discovered a rock outside.  They made a plan to clean it off.  Then it sat on a table for a long time.  This week, they returned to their idea.

“I think it’s concrete.”  MILES

“It’s a crystal.”  JACKSON

“Yikes, that is so cool.”  MILES

“Kieran is going to go around and tell everyone we found a crystal.”  JACKSON

How do we care for our community as we mix new colors?

What do you notice about the water beads?

What have you seen happening to our seeds?

BOOKS

Our final two small groups met to read a book with no words, The Lion and The Mouse.  With Lauri, the children talked about the parts of a book and how we take time and care as we search for meaning in the illustrations.  They practiced looking on their own and then sharing back their ideas with a partner.  Reading books with no words, children practice so many different skills of a reader: reading left to right, handling a book with care, making meaning of the cover and the end pages, practicing storytelling language to make meaning of images, rereading to make new sense, finding joy in books and sharing ideas with others.

OUTDOOR EXPLORE

A walk in the woods to Owl Tree. Children imagine puppies, wolves, birds, and boats.

What story idea did you uncover at Owl Tree?

REFLECTION MEETING

We returned to our conversation about secrets to ask the children about feelings.

How can secrets make us feel?

GREETINGS & GAMES

We played a new game with symmetry.  Ask your child about our MATCHING GAME.

STORY WORKSHOP

This week we invited the children to save a play memory in their sketchbook before we gathered on Thursday.  Taking time to record one true story from their day, children begin to see their true story ideas grow.  They practice recording ideas they can share aloud to the whole group when their name is chosen.  This week, Charlie Nicholson practiced taking the author’s chair again.  This time, she chose to have her work in hand and a friend by her side to support her as she took a risk! It was tricky for her to find words to begin, so the whole group supported her by asking questions first.  As she gave answers, her story grew!

What do you remember about Charlie's story that she titled, A Square In A Square?

We continued our play with tree blood, snap shapes, cardboard, and paint.  Now all children have explored each space! We look forward to challenging them to record a story next week.

What story ideas did you find as you played? How could your story grow?

THINKING WITH A LINE

We played with symmetry!
