We have noticed many of you exploring flowers. Their parts, their shape, their smell, and their function have all been part of your research. Today we are going to return to flowers and their color.

DO
Today we invite you to search for a few flowers. You don’t need many, but flowers of different shapes and colors will be interesting to explore. Finding fallen flowers and petals will work too!
You can also use a blade of grass or a leaf for this work. With the flowers, you will just need the head, that part that holds the petals.
Be sure to check with a grown up before you pick!
What flowers will become part of your color research?
A note for parents:
Taking a walk with your child to find the flowers can be great fun. Slowing down to notice before picking will give pause to the work. Try to encourage variety over amounts. Remember you can always return to find more.
DRAW
Work slowly and carefully. Watch where you pound to make sure your fingers are safe as you work. You can wear goggles too, to protect those eyes!
How does pounding extract color?
As you pound, what do you notice is happening to the top piece of paper?
What do you notice about the thickness of your sandwich? How does it change?
When you remove the top layer of your sandwich, what do you see?
A note for parents:
The same piece of paper can be returned to again and again. You might also consider adding to the print over time as the seasonal flowers will change through the summer. It could create a map of seasonal flowers!
If you would like to watch or rewatch, here is the stop-motion animation we watched during our whole group gathering!
