Studio Red: daily do & draw 5/7

Watch this video for a brief hello from Lauri!
She shares a curiosity.

Dear Studio Red,

Today we invite you to explore something mysterious.  Something that appears and disappears.  Something that gets bigger and smaller.  Something that might confuse you.

DO

Light and shadow go together.  They need each other.  The natural light of the sun casts shadows in many places.  Those shadows shift, move and grow.  Why does that happen?  If we do not have the sun, can we still find shadows?  Can you make them appear and disappear in your house?

How will you find or make shadows?

DRAW

How will you capture a shadow?

Above is one way to capture a shadow on paper.  You might also try using paint or colored pencils.  On a driveway you might use chalk.  Remember you can outline or trace with unexpected tools too.  Perhaps you capture a shadow with rocks, sticks or those collected dandelions, outlining its edge!

A note to parents:

After a shadow is traced, add details or fill it in with color!

Trace many shadows on one piece of paper to create a collage of shadows.

Your child might like to trace a simple shadow over the course of the day.  Think together about why that shadow moves?  Why does the length of it change?

Play a game of shadow tag!

Suzy Lee’s book Shadow is a lovely way to explore how shadows can look like something else.  Find it here on the Internet Archive!
