Studio Red: daily do & draw 5/18

Dear Studio Red,

In the studio we researched knots together as we tied yarn to help us weave!  You all became teachers as you learned new ways of tying.  You turned to your classmates to help others learn.  You asked for help when you wanted to learn!  Sometimes it became a pattern: learning and forgetting, learning and forgetting!  Over time, with practice, we remember all the steps.  Today we invite you to continue this research.  We were inspired by Miles who was thinking about knots at home one day.

do & draw

DO

Do you remember trying to tie a knot when we were weaving? Which steps can you recall? Which part was the trickiest?

Thomas asked Charlie to help him tie a knot.  As Charlie worked with the yarn, Thomas offered a suggestion to help him.

What more can we figure out about knots?

Maybe you are learning to tie your shoes!  Maybe you want to try and create a decoration or a bracelet!  Maybe you have two objects you want to attach!  Maybe you simply want to mess about!  Find one or two pieces of yarn or string and see what knots you can create!

DRAW

Which symbols can help tell the story of a square knot?

We invite you to copy or print these images, put them in order and add symbols to help others follow. Doing this work can also help you get to know this square knot really well.

As we were researching different ways to tie knots, we used our computers to find instructions others have shared.  There are so many ways people try and show others how to tie a knot.  Some draw pictures, some record videos, some capture photographs of the process.  We noticed that many use different symbols to help tell the story.  These symbols can help the learner know the order of the steps and how they need to move the strong to create a knot.

A note to parents:

If you do not have a printer and the drawing seems too daunting for your child, simply having a conversation about how to describe the process is so valuable.  Can your child teach you or another family member how to tie a knot?  Can they give words for each step?
