DO

How will you construct a shelter?

Last week Charlie Nicholson shared photographs of her building work at home.  She designed and constructed a tent outside and fort inside.  Her mom, Katie, told us,She built a tent out of sticks three times (until it no longer fell over)!”  As architects build they learn more about balance and stability.  What tools will you use to create walls and a roof?   Sticks, rocks, pillows, sheets, Lego, blocks, and cardboard are just some of the many materials you may have at home.  Charlie’s structures were both big enough for her to go inside.  Will you build something big enough for you?  Or perhaps you will create something small, just the right size for a toad outside or for your lovey inside.  If you have already been building shelters, try to build on a different scale or change your design to challenge yourself to learn something new!

DRAW

How can you show your steps?

Do you remember when Katie shared instructions for jumping like Toad?  She showed her work in three steps.  Revisit her drawing below!

Your steps will look different because you will draw building instructions.  Sometimes writers call these “how-to manuals” or “how-to books,” because they do just that!  They tell the reader how to do something.  How will you show someone how to build a shelter?

You may begin your work thinking through all the steps.  How did you begin to build?  Which part came first?  Saying each step aloud can help.   Then it is time to draw step one!  Once you are satisfied with your drawing you might think about adding words, numbers, or other symbols to help the reader understand.  You can do this writing yourself or a sibling or grown-up can help you if the challenge feels too big for now.  Don’t forget, you can use the sound tool and hundred chart to help you write!
