Thinking about Storms

Ever since we shared a thunderstorm together on the first day of school, the children have been spinning with storm talk. They are very aware of the wind, be it a gentle breeze or a stronger gust. On this week’s nature walk, we discovered three trees that had been blown over on top of one another.

What do we know about storms?
"They can knock over trees" -- Sylvie
"A wind storm on Raymond Street was so big it knocked down one of these big branches from a big tree across the street...what was the park." -- Margot
"Because it's electricity!" -- Liam "Lightning!" -- Quinn
"I know something about a storm. If a storm is really hard, one time, one day it could blow off a roof on a house." -- Eleanor
"Storms...they are stronger than a house! -- Liam "They're not stronger than a T Rex!" -- Quinn
"Storms can wreck down trees. When they suck up air, they turn it into electricity then they wreck down trees which can make it so the electricity gets so high that it can break off a board off on the inside of a school bus." -- Spencer
"Well do you know what's stronger than a storm? The Incredible Hulk!" -- Quinn
"One tree was trying to hold up another tree but it was just too much."--Margot

Where do Storms come from?
"The wind clouds." -- Sylvie
"They come from another planet." -- Britton "They...storms don't live on a planet!" -- Quinn
"They live inside of a cloud." -- Sylvie "Yeah, they live inside of a cloud." -- Quinn
"They come out of the rain cloud. Rain gets them out." -- Sylvie
"There's a hole at the bottom of the cloud so they can come through. The hole comes out when storms come out." -- Quinn
"The lightning comes from electricity." -- Henry
"My brother has a telescope and he can see where storms come from."--Quinn
