Logs

After watching the children enjoy rotting logs and trees outside on the play space as well as on our nature walks, this week we decided to bring this work inside and see what unfolds when we are able to return to our work day after day.

“There was a stink bug right here yesterday.”  MADELINE P.R.

“Did somebody kill it?”  QUINN

“No, it’s still in here. Stink bugs like dirt, right?”  MADELINE P.R.

Madeline P.R. leaves the play and Spencer enters…

“Henry and I found 3 stink bugs, 1 centipede, and 1 worm yesterday.  We just let them survive here.”  SPENCER

“Let’s find them.”  QUINN

Quinn is carefully removing small pieces from the log with a tweezer and collecting them in a small vial.  Spencer is hammering and scraping larger pieces.

“We found a centipede!”  SPENCER

Quinn takes a closer look and gently puts dirt on it.  “I’m putting dark stuff on him.”

“Children are born naturalists. They explore the world with all of their senses, experiment in the environment, and communicate their discoveries to those around them.”
