Pursuing the children’s interest in deCordova’s landscape equipment, we contacted Brad and Doug. They invited us to their maintenance shed to view what they have on hand. Viewing the shed from afar we asked the children what they thought we may see.
Backhoe and dump trucks. Case
Oh a truck, a truck will be in the shed. Parker
I see lots of wood. Wes
BRAD! Alex
Venturing further we arrived at the shed with open doors.
I see a tractor. Tait
A backhoe. Case
A tractor. Parker
I see something else. It’s another tractor and another truck. Wes
Case inquired as to the name of the machine we have been watching and calling a steamroller lawnmower.
It’s a Rockhound. It has a big rake that rakes all the stones into the bucket. Brad
We noticed it had no steering wheel.
It has two sticks. You push one forward to go forward and pull one back to go backward. Brad
Daddy has sticks like that in his car to drive. Avery
Watching the children admire the machine, Brad questions them.
Do you know what this is called? This is the bucket. Brad
I like trucks. Avery
Do you know what this is? Brad
A rake. Tait
My friend Callen gave me a kids rake. Avery
Addie looks through the clear glass door of the tractor.
I see the seat. Addie
I see the steering wheel. Parker
I see the big wheels. Can I go in the wheel? Tait
I can’t fit in. I’m a big boy. Case
My baby could fit in there. Parker
Only my hat can fit in. Case
This one has no seat. Why was there not a seat on top of it? Alex
We’re fixing it. After it’s fixed we’ll put the seat and a back rest back on. Brad
Our excitement about our visit spilled over into the next day when we discovered the tractor working outside our gate. We took advantage of Brad’s offer to come to them with any questions or wonderings. Today, they were pulling weeds and collecting them in the bucket.
